The Information Experience team consists of more than 90 people who work directly with product and project teams across the software development lifecycle to deliver documentation for major and minor releases of VMware Products and SDKs. Team members must have the flexibility and versatility to adapt to the challenges that work on products with broad scope and scale can bring. The team prides itself on meticulous, fast-paced, high quality documentation. It is never boring!
We are seeking to hire a Senior Technical Writer. This position will be a temporary replacement for maternity leave. As a Senior Technical Writer you will create documentation for technical end users, system administrators, and developers. You will author content in DITA and use a CMS to manage and deliver it. You will write installation guides, user guides, API guides, release notes, online help, and knowledge-base articles. You will contribute to the user interface design of products and to the production of video material for VMware products.
Gather information by working closely with engineers and writers, reading design documents and specifications, and using pre-release software
Work closely with Development Engineers, Quality Engineers, Product Management, Release Managers, and Co-writers
Create documentation plans and schedules
Create and update documentation and help systems for minor and major releases
Review the human-readable strings in user facing interface
Follow established processes and procedures
Support and contribute to departmental goals

The ideal candidate is able to understand and explain complex technical concepts, has strong writing skills, good working habits, works effectively on a globally-distributed team in a fast-paced environment, has excellent verbal and written communication skills
Perfect command of the English language – ability to write clear and concise text and to follow editorial guidelines, ability to learn complex concepts quickly and explain them clearly
Proven experience in writing software documentation for a very technical audience. At least 5 year experience in a writing role
Solid planning and scheduling experience within tight deadlines.
At least 4 year experience working in a software development company. Thorough knowledge of the software development process is a must.
Must be flexible and enjoy working with new technology in a dynamic environment where requirements change rapidly
Has experience working on international teams across geographies
Work experience with version control systems
Academic degree in computer science, a technical field or Journalism
Knowledge of HTML is a must; knowledge of CSS and experience with Web publishing is a plus
Basic knowledge of a programming language is a plus
Knowledge of information design, structured writing, XML, and DITA is a strong plus
