VMware Sr. Manager R&D in Sofia, Bulgaria

The ESXi LifeCycle team is looking for a Senior Development Manager to lead our Europe team that is getting built in Sofia, Bulgaria. We are looking for technically strong candidates, preferably well versed in VMWare technologies, that have the capability and zest to lead a medium sized team to design, develop and grow new and exciting technologies in the space of vSphere/ESXi LifeCycle.

The ESXi LifeCycle space is becoming critical to our business as we make a strong push into the Cloud deployment environments. Unlike in the usual enterprise ‘on prem’ environments, Cloud environments typically have very aggressive standards to meet in terms of product lifecycle and configuration management, both in terms of time and frequency. Consequently, our products that deploy, configure and manage ESXi hypervisor technology, need to be able to operate at scale, interoperate well with other product streams in the Cloud and have terrific reliability metrics. These requirements will require us to completely rethink our strategy for lifecycle management – our products need to be so seamless and ‘transparent’ to the end user Cloud admin that lifecycle and configuration management becomes just a routine administrative affair rather than the long drawn out, pre-planned-for-‘maintenance windows’ exercise that it is now with our enterprise customers. Our product needs to become a one-stop shop, a single pane of glass control system, to orchestrate the lifecycle/configuration management of large Cloud (and enterprise datacenter) deployments.

Fortunately, we have a way forward. With the help of CPBU Principal Engineers and along with the senior technical leadership in the team, we have the initial roadmap and broad design directions for a very exciting view into the future of these products. These initial, high level discussions will necessarily require some products to be completely re-designed to meet new Cloud-scale requirements, while some products may need to have some very useful features created for them – in either case, the overarching vision has been to make these products inter operate as seamlessly as possible. Overall, the roadmap is to make all our products work in a cohesive fashion that completely hides the complex details of lifecycle/configuration management from the user and provides a great user experience. These high-level goals will make sure to support the requirements from premium VMWare products such as VSAN and NSX to make sure that, along with vSphere, these offerings become extremely easy to administer.

The main LifeCycle/Configuration space for ESXi can be visualized to be broken down into three main areas of Image Management, Configuration Management and Delivery. The Image Management notion should deal with being able to create Image content and manipulating / administering it on the ESXi server. The Delivery aspect should allow this content to be made available to ESXi ‘pods’ in whichever fashion the content needs to be consumed. Finally, the Configuration Management initiative will need to allow for a transparent model of configuration and compliance for both vSphere and other premium products such as NSX, VSAN etc. These self-sustaining ESXi ‘pods’ could possibly form the basic building block of our Cloud and Enterprise datacenter deployments and should be manageable through a single pane of glass control/orchestration mechanism provided by our products.

This vision mentioned so far is just that – vision. There is a lot of new/innovative work that will need to be done to validate this vision and start on the road to design and productize it. Note also that the vision is just the seed – think of the vast available opportunity of managing Cloud deployments with seamless firmware/software integration, disruptive and truly complete mass-scale Cloud ready lifecycle solutions … since we are charting some new areas, there is ample opportunities for the team to file patents, technical papers, RADIO presentations – your, and the team’s, innovativeness and energy will be the sole deciding factor on what you can do with this opportunity.

To create product out of this very high level grand vision, we are looking to setup a team in Sofia, Bulgaria, that will work with the current LifeCycle team in Palo Alto, and help design/implement/refine our new and existing products. This team will own some portions of the LifeCycle space while the Palo Alto team owns the other portions. Apart from Palo Alto, there will be some portion of the product currently supported out of our Bangalore offices, that the new Sofia team will need to work with as well. Together, these three sites will be responsible for the successful delivery of our designs.

We are looking to seed this team in Sofia with an outstanding technical manager who can build the team up and guide it in designing and developing the vision into reality. This engineering development manager will be responsible in obtaining a deep technical understanding of the requirements that we are looking to fulfill with these new designs, and then help in hiring and ramping up the rest of the team. Some of the characteristics we are looking for in this managerial role are:

  1. 5-10 years of experience managing a development team in a fast-moving technical product area – preferably in an agile environment.

  2. A technical background with either a Bachelor’s or a Master’s (preferred) in CS/CE/EE or related field.

  3. Some experience with VMWare technologies, either as a user or developer, would be a huge bonus.

  4. A background in systems programming will be very useful. The main programming languages that the team will work in are Python/C/C++.

  5. An ability and desire to evangelize your/team’s ideas and initiatives to the rest of the technical organization – be ready to own the vision and become the CEO for your product!

  6. An ability to lead the team from the front in technical environments – work with the senior technical leadership in the team to chart out a strategy and make sure all team members are empowered to give their best to the team goals while they are held accountable for their contributions.

  7. Proven ability to build strong, capable and efficient teams by identifying, hiring and motivating the strongest candidates on the market, as well as working with existing team members to help them thrive, deliver their best and bring their careers to the next level.

  8. An absolute must – work with cross-geography teams to set the agenda for technical work and help/lead the effort to make teams work without friction. You will need to make sure that friction between teams is dealt with well (and kept to a minimum!). The ability to accommodate cross-geo communications in a timely manner is an essential quality desired.

The ESXi LifeCycle suite of products consists of Auto Deploy and Host Profiles (which together provide the Stateless deployment of ESXi), VMWare Update Manager (VUM, which orchestrates cluster-based lifecycle workflows), ESXi Installer/Image Builder (which manage image content creation), hardware health management (via SNMP and CIM) and EAM (which is already developed in Sofia, but will be expected to integrate much more with VUM workflows in the future – we expect the EAM team to be a part of the new team being built up in Sofia). We expect either a complete component or portions of one to be owned by each of the three sites of our team, while the other site(s) act as backups for that component/portion.
