VMware Digital Platform Services and Data Architect in Sofia, Bulgaria
The Global Services Digital Platform team is a key component of VMware’s support organization that provides an enriched and valuable ecosystem of data platform and data services that drive innovation for our customers, product business units and support engineers, within VMware and globally. Data is the most valuable asset in VMware and the GS Digital Platform, which contains knowledge, support ticketing, chat, communities and Skyline (which provides a real-time/continuous feed of customer data). The Digital Platform team is dedicated to develop advanced technology systems and services to make data secure, high quality, rich, fast, and easy to use, therefore enabling VMware the ability to leverage its data asset in an effective and timely manner to maximize technology/business development and differentiate VMware from others in the client support industry.
VMware is seeking a Digital Platform Services and Data Architect in the GS Digital Platform team to act as one of key technology leaders to build and manage the Digital Platform’s technology assets.
This individual will act as a trusted technical advisor and strategic thought leader to the Digital Platform team and to the rest of the organization’s product business units. The successful candidate will be comfortable navigating challenging forces in the dynamic support space especially in the SaaS/PaaS areas and be comfortable in a fast-paced environment with significant changes; developing/implementing strategies and processes that enable the organization to innovate and grow fast. You will have the opportunity to lead, participate, guide, and mentor other people in the team and design in a hands-on manner. You are a key contributor to the strategic and technical direction of Digital Platform. This position reports to the Sr. Manager, Digital Platform and has location flexibility. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership with rich industrial experience in the big data and/or large-scale software platform areas
Primary responsibilities will include:
Provide Architectural leadership and vision for the Digital Platform on two fronts: data architecture and service architecture (to access and integrate with the data). Develop and maintain an architectural roadmap for data and services plus ensuring alignment with the business and enterprise architecture strategies and standards. Able to develop, present and explain the value and vision of proposed architectures and solutions to a wide range of audience.
Provide architectural leadership for allow other teams to consume data captured by the Digital Platform; provide corresponding means for allowing other teams to contribute data back to the Digital Platform (either through raw data, analyzed data, or events that can trigger automated actions).
Provide architectural leadership for visualization of Digital Platform data (in isolation, or in aggregation with other data sources within VMware).
Provide architectural input in designing the methodology and services required to create, manage, and execute functions against the Digital Platform. Work with the Digital Platform engineering groups to implement consistent and scalable services. Determine which interfaces need rigour to enable flexibility for the teams to iterate and build as fast as they can.
Provide guidance for creating a program/platform for allowing other business product domain experts to contribute their expertise in an automatable format.
Key Responsibilities will include:
Apply creative thinking/approach to determine technical solutions that further business goals and align with corporate technology strategies, keeping in mind performance, reliability, scalability, usability, security, flexibility, and cost.
Define and drive technology standard and best practices in the Digital Platform areas and lead some key projects.
Maintain broad technical and solution knowledge in software, infrastructure, big data, security, and business architecture areas.
Articulate technology solutions as well as explain the competitive advantages of various technology alternatives.
Work on highly complex issues with broad technical or strategic implications for the organization.
Engage with Digital Platform customers/partners to understand their needs and provide suggestions/guidance on what SaaS/PaaS techniques are appropriate to solve their problems with pros/cons articulated clearly.
Drive internal proof of concept initiatives. When needed, quickly design and implement a prototype of a system or component with a proper architecture, and then hand over to (may lead) a small group of developers to finish.
Build relationships with key architects across technology organizations and collaborate on promoting architectural best practices across technology
Provide mentorship and help team growth especially on technical side.
Experienced technology leader with a minimum of 10+ years of software development experience including 5+ years of application or platform architecture experience with deep technology expertise in the following:
Extensive experience on architecture design and development of large scale platforms and application with simple solutions
Deep knowledge and hands on experience on big data and cloud computing technologies including Hadoop, Spark, Hive, HBase, etc.
Extensive hands on design/coding experience/skills using Python, Java. Strong on elegant coding, can write very solid prototypes or core components quickly.
Strong service development experience with high performance and scalability
Web Services (REST/ SOAP)
Service Oriented Architecture
Experience on application/platform instrumentation, measurement, log data processing, and monitoring.
Familiar with Database, ETL and BI technologies
Experience on distributed application performance engineering, database design, middleware, user interface development, and information security engineering
Technical background in data with deep understanding of issues in multiple areas such as data management, query processing, distributed processing, high availability
Have a successful track record of leading architecture work for large scale projects that represent broad strategic initiatives meeting quantifiable business objectives and resulting in tangible impact for the organization. Demonstrated expertise in leveraging agile and other development methodologies
Strong at technical goal setting for a project with actionable success metrics. Good knowledge and experience on measuring a service from user experience angle.
Strong at identifying problems, solving complex problems with simple solutions.

Demonstrated proficiency and experience in one or more of the following areas: application architecture, solutions architecture, software systems architecture, and data architecture.
Strong on driving for results and self-motivated, strong learning mindset, with good understanding of related advanced/new technology. Keep up with the technology development in the related areas in the industry, which could be leveraged to enhance current architectures and build durable new ones.
Good verbal, written, presentation, facilitation, and interaction skills, including ability to effectively communicate architectural issues and concepts to multiple organization levels and executive management.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical discipline required; advanced degree is a plus.
